Lucia di Lammermoor is a tragic Dramma in two acts by Gaetano Donizetti. Salvadore Cammarano wrote Italian libretto loosely based on the historical novel by Sir Walter Scott The Bride of Lammermoor.

The story concerns a dispute between two families, Ashton and Ravenswood. When the opera begins, the Ashtons are in the ascendancy and have taken possession of Ravenswood Castle, the ancestral home of their rivals. Edgardo (Sir Edgar), Master of Ravenswood and last surviving member of his family was forced to live in a lonely tower in the sea, known as Wolf Rock. The Ashton, despite its success, are threatened by changes in political and religious forces. Enrico (Lord Henry Ashton) hopes to obtain the protection of important Arturo (Lord Arthur Bucklaw) who intends to marry his sister Lucia.

The opera created in September 26, 1835 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. Donizetti revised the score for a version in French, which began August 6, 1839 at the Renaissance Theater in Paris. Creating a great success, remains today one of the leading bel canto operas.
